A broken screen is expensive – but easy to avoid
Screen repairs are one of the most common reasons people come to us at OdenseTech. And most damage could have been avoided with simple precautions. Here is the complete guide to protecting your phone – and saving money on repairs.
1. Invest in a good case
A case is the most important protection for your phone. But not all cases are created equal. Here's what to look for:
Types of cases
- Thin plastic case: Protects against scratches, but not against drops. Cheap, but limited protection.
- Silicone case: Good shock absorption, good grip. Can turn yellow over time.
- Hybrid case (TPU + plastic): Good combination of protection and appearance. Recommended for most.
- Rugged case (e.g. OtterBox, UAG): Maximum protection against drops. Slightly thicker, but ideal for active users.
- Wallet case: Also protects the screen when the phone is closed. Practical, but can be bulky.
Recommendation: Invest in a hybrid case from a reputable brand. It costs 150–400 DKK and can save you a screen repair for 500–1,500 DKK.
2. Tempered glass screen protector
A tempered glass screen protector is the second most important investment. It absorbs the impact of drops and protects the original screen from scratches and cracks.
Choose a screen protector that precisely fits your phone model. Cheap universal protectors fit poorly and provide poor touch sensitivity. A good screen protector costs 100–250 DKK and is worth every penny.
3. Be aware of high-risk situations
Most phone damage occurs in a few specific situations:
- In the toilet: The phone slips out of your pocket or hand. Use a case with good grip.
- In the kitchen: Liquid and drops on hard surfaces. Keep the phone away from the sink.
- During sports and exercise: Use an armband holder or place the phone securely.
- When getting out of the car: The phone falls out of your pocket. Always check before closing the door.
- In bed: The phone falls onto your face or the floor. Use a case with good grip.
4. Avoid extreme temperatures
Never leave your phone in direct sunlight in the car in the summer – temperatures above 45°C can permanently damage the battery and other components. In winter, cold can temporarily reduce battery life and, in rare cases, damage the screen.
5. Protect the charging port
The charging port is a vulnerable point. Avoid forcing cables at angles – always use cables that fit correctly. Clean the port regularly for dirt and lint (see our cleaning guide).
6. Use Find My iPhone
Protection is not just about physical damage. Activate Find My iPhone under Settings → [Your Name] → Find My. If the phone is stolen or lost, you can track it, lock it, and erase data remotely.
