Your phone is full of bacteria – did you know that?
Studies show that a smartphone contains up to 10 times more bacteria than a toilet seat. We touch our phones hundreds of times a day – after touching doorknobs, banknotes, and everything else. Yet most of us rarely clean our phones properly.
But cleaning a smartphone requires caution – wrong methods can damage the screen, ports, and water resistance. Here's the right way to do it.
What you need
- Microfiber cloth (dry and slightly damp)
- 70% isopropyl alcohol or Apple-approved cleaning agents
- Cotton swabs (for ports and corners)
- Canned air (for speakers and ports)
- Dry, soft toothbrush
What you should NOT use
- Bleach or chlorine-based cleaners: Breaks down the phone's coatings
- Vinegar: Can damage the oleophobic coating on the screen
- Paper towels or napkins: Can scratch the screen
- Too much liquid: Can penetrate the phone
- Abrasive cleaning agents
Step-by-step: How to clean your smartphone
Step 1: Turn off the phone and remove the case
Always turn off your phone before cleaning it. Remove the case and clean it separately. The case often collects more dirt than the phone itself.
Step 2: Wipe the screen with a dry microfiber cloth
Use a dry microfiber cloth to remove fingerprints and dirt from the screen. Move the cloth in circular motions with light pressure. Avoid pressing hard on the screen.
Step 3: Disinfect with alcohol
Lightly dampen a microfiber cloth with 70% isopropyl alcohol. Squeeze the cloth so it doesn't drip. Gently wipe the screen and the back of the phone. Avoid ports, speakers, and microphone. Let the phone air dry for 1–2 minutes.
Step 4: Clean the charging port
The charging port collects dirt, lint, and dust over time – and it's a frequent cause of charging problems. Use a dry toothbrush or canned air to gently remove dirt from the port. Never insert anything metallic into the port.
Step 5: Clean the speakers
Use a dry, soft toothbrush to gently brush the speaker grille. Canned air can also be used – hold it at a distance and use short bursts. Cleaning the speakers can significantly improve sound quality.
Step 6: Clean the camera lensUse a dry microfiber cloth to gently wipe the camera lens. A clean lens provides significantly better pictures. Avoid touching the lens directly with your fingers.
Step 7: Clean and reattach the case
Clean the case with alcohol or soapy water (depending on the material). Let it dry completely before putting it back on the phone.
How often should you clean your phone?
- Daily: Wipe the screen with a dry microfiber cloth
- Weekly: Full cleaning with alcohol
- Monthly: Clean the charging port and speakers
- After illness: Thorough disinfection
